The Velveteen Rabbit was one of my favorite books as a child. The story was an allegory about the worth and weight of love. A child loves a stuffed animal so much that its Velveteen case is worn down to the threads and button eyes become loose and go missing. At first, the rabbit is worried and embarrassed but eventually accepts and celebrates its condition because it is a sign of how much the child loved it and how much the rabbit meant to the child.
We find that this can be true with homes as well. We often are invited by long-time homeowners and children of long-time owners to help prepare their homes for sale that have been well-loved for many years. Each door scratched by a pet is a memory. A broken drawer, a reoccurring annoyance remembered fondly. The window, now repaired but was a mess of a scene from children chasing each other.
The challenge homeowners have to accept as they move to being sellers is that their house will soon be loved by someone else. This means those threadbare spots that brought them joy are going to need to be repaired, remodeled, or replaced. It serves them well to stop thinking about it as their home but instead as a house and consider how to make it shine like new for someone else. Some are able to do this work themselves and others lean more heavily on us to lead the transformation. We can help reduce the stress of selling by offering targeted advice on what repairs or upgrades will not only make the home look better, but also add more value.
